Root Canals

Root canal treatments are performed to save and restore what’s left of badly damaged or decayed teeth. A root canal is a simple, commonly-performed procedure necessary to prevent the spread of infection and stop the possibility of further tissue damage.

Despite their reputation, root canals are safe, easy and generally pain-free procedures, and can be performed in just one office visit. As a tooth’s root and pulp become damaged they can become infected, prompting the need for removal. An infection within a tooth can lead to swelling, the appearance of abscesses and pain in your head, face or mouth.  If left untreated the infection can spread to other areas of your mouth, potentially threatening your overall oral health.

A root canal procedure consists of the removal of the damaged nerve and tissue. Once removed, the tooth is cleaned, filled and sealed, returning the tooth to a normal state. A root canal treatment helps to preserve the infected tooth, reduce swelling and eliminate any pain or discomfort. A local anesthetic is usually applied during a root canal procedure, and over-the-counter medications are generally recommended to combat any lingering pain or discomfort after the treatment.
